But campers must plug into shore power or a generator. The 12V parking coolers reduce fleet fuel costs because the drivers no longer idle the engines overnight to keep air conditioners going.ĭometic claims that the RTX2000 pushes out 6,824 BTUs of cooling energy, compared to many rooftop RV units with a 13,500 BTU rating. The air conditioners in that world are dubbed “parking coolers” they keep the cab cool while parked overnight. Dometic RTX2000: Tech from the Trucking Industryĭometic borrows the RTX2000 from its offerings in trucking. I don’t use the term “game-changer” if I can help it, but that’s what this system was. I head out confident that my family and pets will get a restful night’s sleep. The Dometic RTX 2000 and Vandoit’s lithium 460 amp hour power system changed how I plan outings during the summer months. I heartily accepted the challenge of testing both in the brutal heat and humidity of the Texas summer. Vadoit leveraged both and offered the 12V AC with a lithium 460 amp hour battery system. Luckily, 12V air conditioners and battery systems have advanced, making untethered air conditioning more reliable.ĭometic released its 12V RTX2000 air conditioner to the RV market in late 2020, coinciding with improvements in battery technology. Sure, there have been 12V air conditioning systems, but they relied on custom battery setups, and the performance was mediocre at best. Summer boondocking in many states meant suffering through hot and muggy nights. I found that the 12V Dometic RTX2000 and Vandoit Lithium 460 Amp Hour Power System make this former fantasy a reality. I think this is the more logical way to go unless someone can see something I am not seeing.Vanlifers have longed for air conditioning without needing an outlet or generator. And then if I am on shore power, I don't need as big a charger to run everything and charge the batteries at the same time. Just looking at fridges shows I might save a chunk of change there by going to 120VAC only. I am going to have minimal windows, and probably be far better insulated than a factory built.Ī 12VDC AC would be great for simplicity, but I guess since I will need the inverter anyway, I might as well just make every 120VAC and save the money. But I guess if you have a lot of windows and you are in the desert sun, you might need that much. Gasoline furnace for heat.Ģ0,000 is excessive if you ask me. I am trying to avoid having propane and just be all electric with around 5kWh of battery, 800W of solar, and then the under hood generator if I need it. So, I would need a decent sized inverter anyway. Also, I think I am going to go with an instant on hot water heater of around 2 or 3 kW, and an induction cooktop. I could get another 2.5kWh battery, plus the inverter and AC unit, and I would be able to run the portable unit for more time. I was hoping by now the prices would have dropped, but not so much. I just don't like the idea of spending that much money on something that only does one thing.
